BIOGRAPHY

1982 - 1986

Gilbert Serex started his diploma in the a Technical college in Lausanne where he studied electronic mechanics. During this period he discovered his particular interest and aptitude in the domain of electronic design and computers. As a result his interests lead him to win first prize for his project of a high power amplifier.

1987

Having completed his military service, he travelled to England to study the English language and its culture in Torquay Eurocenter.

1988

In January 1988 he travelled to West Berlin working for Zeiss Ikon as an electrician for three months, his main goal to learn German.

1988 - 1993 Valtronic SA Switzerland

He started his career working for Valtronic SA, Leader in Electronic miniaturisation (SMT COB). He was introduced to CAD system (Dazix), designing Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) from schematic capture to post processing procedures. Management quickly recognised his special aptitudes to work rapidly effectively and independently. He was therefore given the opportunity to design several major projects.

He designed medical equipment (Automatic dosing Insulin injector, menstrual thermometer - contraceptive device, muscular stimulator). Security photographic Spot Alarm, Memory modules, miniaturised Accelerometers, Radio Frequency modules (pager), Modems, wrist watch diving computers.

His most challenging project was the conception of a wrist watch pager (Swatch), Yet the worlds' smallest pager.

Due to the complexity of technology (Multilayered boards, Chip On Board and Surface Mount) and the modules limited size, computer software was and is still unable to place and route automatically. It was at this keypoint that he showed a particular talent in the designing of high-density sub-miniature electronic modules. Complementary to PCB Design activities he was introduced to the wide aspect of project management. - Stock control, production file management, components purchasing, assembly operations supervision etc.

1993 - 1998 ETA SA, a company of the SWATCH GROUP

A career move was instigated by the recession in Switzerland affecting Valtronic SA and its demand for new PCB designs. Due to his knowledge of the PCB designs of the Swatch pager, ETA invited him to continue his work directly for the company.

Whilst his initial activities involved developing smaller and more complex PCB designs, the newly acquired computer software (Mentor) was in need of customisation. At this stage he was assigned the task of the implementation of Mentor graphics software.

Besides the construction work, his secondary activity is to maintain the system remains operational and performant to the users with a maximisation of time. The workshop is equipped with five Sun and ten DEC-alpha workstations currently used by twenty employees. In addition it is his responsibility to assist other colleagues within the R&D department (160 employees).

1998 - 2003 Raytheon Systems Ltd

Having decided to move on to something a little more challenging and to discover new horizons, a career move abroad had been decided in mid 1997, the choice was Scotland. By the middle of 1998 and after seeing many potential employers in the region (HP, Motorola, DeLaRue amongst others) a job opportunity to work at Raytheon Systems Ltd. Appeared.

He started at his new post by developing multi layer power PCB for the Oil prospection industry, as well a multilayer "blind and buried" high power avionics motor drives. Once again, Mentor computer software, mainly the IC Back-end, was in need of improvement and optimisation. At this stage he was assigned the task of the implementation of Mentor graphics IC device generators (version C1 and C4) to a second source foundry process, much needed due to unprecedented demand in semiconductor devices, mainly automotive (car sensors controllers) medical (insulin pumps) industrial devices (fire detectors). This migration and implementation has been completed successfully. This exercise has enabled him to understand the interaction of the IC Blocks Place and Route and SDL (Schematic Driven Layout), including IC topology management (Partitioning) and Autorouting.

Besides the construction work, his secondary activity is to upgrade the actual Mentor graphics systems library management system to a similar type of system that he previously implemented in ETA SA. The system, being entirely process independent due to the use of Industry Standard language (Perl), can be married with existing infrastructure without a great deal of challenges.

1998 - 2003, Self Employment Sharpnet Internet Solutions

In late 1998 having moved into his own home in Glenrothes, he drafted a business plan, to create a small web design consultancy called Sharpnet Internet Solutions. His primarily prospect where to attract a "clientele" of small businesses into having a web site. Since then, his VAT registered company (as a sole trader) has been involved in many contracts, from small to full blown CGI interactive web sites. His late developments include a wide range of Perl and PHP programs like Classifieds, Professional System Automation (PSA), Content Management Systems (CMS) and other Innovative scripts.

2003 - , Director Sharpnet Internet Solutions Ltd

Sharpnet Incorporated into a Limited Company in April 2003.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (past and present jobs)

As member of a large enterprise it is his responsibility to train and inform colleagues and trainees of new concepts, documentation, software applications and changes within the existing infrastructure (systems analysis).

In liaison with Mentor Graphics he was charged to animate special training courses upon Mentors request, having recognised his in-depth understanding and application skills. Trainees were appreciative of the simplistic manner in which he was able to share his profound knowledge.

The involvement of his activities have shown him the importance of furnishing as quickly and precisely as possible vital information for the well being of the company. He has proven to show a strong motivation in the examination of new computer software, and is constantly seeking to increase his knowledge in this field of work, and most importantly share his experience. He is a prone activist of "online information systems" using the Internet, to him, there is only one way and it is the Internet!

He considers team work to be the key solution to a competitive activity. His warm personality and character enables him to encourage and motivate his colleagues to achieve their targets.

As his own Boss he is responsible of the entire business activities from accounts keeping to Web design programming.

TRAINING

He has participated in a variety of managerial courses. The training has been rigorous including the following subjects: leadership, self awareness, organisation, communication, formation of trainees (teaching skills), infra structural management. Learns something new everyday.
